Finally, I have progressed on my project of a new necklace to where I can show everyone. It looks finished but there are a few "do-overs" required. I agree it really doesn't show in the picture but trust me, some of the wire work is ugly. While making a piece, the design comes first then the "neatness". At least for me, especially, in this case.

The colors need to be moved around too. Notice there are three beads all in a row? Not what I would like to see. So, while the wire do-overs are being done, I plan to rearrange some beads too.

This is a rather different type of necklace for me. It is bold and chunky - and not silver. Please let me know if you like this direction or this particular necklace. Double Link Copper necklace is available on Ring by Ring Designs website.



I've also been working on a new pin in the Lexie Jewelry line. It should be at least designed soon. I've had some problems finding parts that would work with our design.  Stay tuned.

There is also a seed bead bracelet I'm working on that is a little frustrating. Only because I'm really not a big fan of using seed beads. That is called an "attitude" problem. But I'm determined as I like the results - should I get to that point.  ;-)

Pantone recommendations

 

Let me first thank those who responded with answers to my questions last week. It is very helpful. (If you did not have a chance to respond, I would still like to hear from you.)

 

 

Last fall, I had a post entitled Matching your jewelry. I shared the predicted colors for fall as recommended by Pantone, the be all end all of color in both fashion and for the home.

 

 

You may like to know that 2012 Color of the Year is Pantone's Color "Tangerine Tango". It is a great color but doesn't personally excite me as that color doesn't look good on me. But it will explain why you will start seeing it a lot in spring and summer clothes.

 

 

 

There are other colors recommended, too, such as Solar Power and Bellflower.

That is a bright yellow!

 

 

 

 

 

Another combination is Cabaret and Sodalite Blue. Ah, these are more my colors.

 

 

 

You can see more color choices and how designers are using these colors for spring at the Pantone site  It is really packed with interesting information. (They have the spring colors for men again, too)

 

 

I found the color Sodalite Blue interesting as Sodalite is one of my favorite gemstones. The color is very much like the more expensive Lapis Luzuli. Both have streaks of white. In Egyptian times, Lapis Lazuli was worth more than gold. Sodalite and Lapis Lazuli are supposed to give you inner healing and help clear and calm the mind.

 

 

 

 

 

One of my favorite bracelets is a memory wire bracelet made with Sodalite chips and pearls. It is a one size fits most, too.  (I don't have it on my site, but if you are interested, send me an email.)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I've shared my likes and dislikes pertaining to the new colors for Spring. Do you find any of these colors interesting? Don't like them?  I'd love to hear you thoughts.

 

 

 

​The several new pieces in the works are still in the works. Hopefully, I'll have them finished by next week. (I had several orders and they take precedence over new things. Nice problem...)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year 2012

I'm hoping you all had a great holiday season and are ready for a new year. Well, ready or not here is 2012!

Do you like the new look of the newsletter?

You might like to know that the two bracelets I made for my granddaughters were well received.  I also, gave a memory wire bracelet "kit" to my oldest granddaughter. She has helped me make some before on one of our trips to visit.  I pulled out my drawer of seed beads and let her choose the colors and combinations of beads she would like. Shortly, she had a great bracelet to wear with her "Frog" bracelet.

I didn't get a picture of my other granddaughter's bracelet, unfortunately, but it looked nice on her.

Have you made any New Year's resolutions? I have not made anything specific. Just trying to keep up and make a few goals. I'll be counting on you, my list of customers and friends, to help me with some of those goals. I rely on your input to be able to supply you with things you would like to see.

I've determined that most of you don't like to respond to my questions.   ;-)   I can understand that. I don't reply often to newsletters I read either. 

The most helpful things I would like to know are things like:

• Do  you wear bracelets, necklaces, earrings more than the other?
• What are your favorite colors?
• What are your favorite metals? Silver, gold, gunmetal...?
• Do you have a favorite Ring by Ring Designs piece or technique?

​I have several new pieces in the works. Hopefully, I'll have finished by next week.

We are not all the same!

We are not all the same!

Really!

With the holidays almost upon us I thought it would me nice to have a different kind of

newsletter/email. Plus, I'm out of new ideas. I read another blog this morning and thought of this, so, here goes a favorite story of ours.

Most of you know that my husband and
I have been married more than 50 years.
We are the perfect example of that statement.
"We are not all the same"


That can be followed with the statement
"Let me count the ways". Fortunately, our
differences are usually a source of
amusement rather than causing problems.





I think the first time we noticed our different outlook on the same idea or phrase was soon after we were married.  I had baked a nice two layer cake. Because there were only two of us, the cake lasted a long time and soon became dry etc.

My husband's answer to this "problem" was:
"Make just one layer and cut it in half and make a two layer cake.

A little aside here, my son loves to tell and embellish this story. Our children have heard it a lot. I will give you the shorter version.

I proceeded to make just one layer (8 inches round) Then I cut the cake in half and frosted the two resulting layers.

When my husband came home, I proudly presented him with a nice two layer cake after our dinner.

His response was not what I expected.
"What the .... happened to the cake?"

Now here is the difference in what he was expecting and what I thought he meant.

At our 50 Anniversary party, my oldest daughter and her daughter were nice enough to make two cakes. One my way and one my husband's way.

I was always a fan of Boston Cream Pie (which is really a cake - but I digress) So, cutting a cake in half horizontally was a good idea, I thought. However, I can see that cutting it in half, his way, does make sense.  Now, don't tell him I said that.



You will also notice that some things never change. Last fall we were on vacation and were having some muffins for breakfast. Suddenly, I looked at the table in front of us and notice the following picture. The muffin on the right is mine (cut horizontally) and my husband's on the left - you guessed it - cut the same as the cake

Granddaughters

 

Granddaughters

(I have two)

Actually, I have a total of seven grandchildren. So, if I have two grand daughters, I must have five grandsons. ;-)  While I really love them all, as a jewelry designer, having two granddaughters, is really nice. Plus they are getting old enough to wear and appreciate jewelry. I hope they will like what Grandma makes. Grandsons definitely have different desires.

Jewelry designing is something I picked up from my parents and the love of making jewelry for others,  especially for granddaughters.



Some of you know that my Mother, and Dad, too, used to make jewelry. During WWII, my Mother made jewelry using shells. Even Costume jewelry was not readily available then. She was able to find a supplier in Florida that carried shells.  Her cousin worked at Eastman Kodak where she had access to working women who had some extra money and had a place to wear jewelry. So, my mother would make pins and earrings from shells and her cousin would sell them for her. One memory I have of the jewelry sales was that she saved her money and purchased a vacuum cleaner. It cost $89! She had that vacuum cleaner for quite a long time. Very exciting purchase!

Then in the 70's they both made jewelry. Mostly out of pearls. Dad made necklaces and bracelets. And my Mother crocheted long ropes. (One of my beading buddies is very proficient with that method now.) I have many of their pieces but don't have any good pictures.





Anyhow, I just finished a pretty pink bracelet for my youngest granddaughter. She just turned six. While I'm told she loves jewelry, I was also told that she is very hard on it. So, I decided to make a Memory Wire bracelet. The Memory Wire is very strong. The bracelet has two wraps and to make it special for her I added her name and a little heart charm. Hope she likes it.







Remember the Frog bracelet?

It turns out that my out that the mascot for the school of my other granddaughter, is the Frog. So, guess what she will be receiving for Christmas? Again, I hope she likes it.




And so it goes with presents for special people. You're glad when you find something that you think is appropriate and something they will like.  This is the fun of finding just the "right" gift.
